The best wrestling tricks of all time
Wrestling has changed quite a bit over the years, but one thing that hasn’t changed is that a useless wrestler can become a superstar if he has a great gimmick.
There is a difference between a gimmick and a character, Steve Austin and Hulk Hogan were great characters but their appearance was pretty much how they would anyway.
Not all superstars with a gimmick are useless wrestlers, but the gimmick certainly won’t have hurt their career. Glen Jacobs, or Kane as he is better known, is the perfect example. He tried numerous tricks, like Icaac Yankem, but to no avail, however, since Kane’s creation, Jacobs has never looked back, becoming a superstar and even starring in his own movie. Would he have accomplished this without a great trick? I really doubt it.
So which tricks have been the best over the years? Here are some of the best wrestling tricks:
the undertaker
Without a doubt, the most recognizable and successful trick of all time. Mark Calloway had struggled to make an impact in the wrestling business until he joined WWE and they created The Undertaker. Everything about the character was perfect, from the entrance and theme music to The Undertaker’s look and ring style, this was wrestling’s greatest creation.
Over the years, WWE has tried to experiment with the character, but the original incarnation of The Undertaker is still the best, and without it, Mark Calloway would never have achieved the legendary status he now has.
The last Warrior
What was it that worked so well for Ultimate Warrior? I can’t quite put my finger on it, but there’s no denying the success of the characters and when the entrance music started, the entire roof of the building actually collapsed, oddly enough. the theme song that accompanied the entrance of The Ultimate Warriors was a big contributing factor to the success of the gimmicks. He couldn’t talk, he could barely wrestle, but thanks to the creation of The Ultimate Warriors, Jim Hellwig can take his place in wrestling history.
the demolition
Ax and Smash, also known as Demolition, were nothing more than average in the ring, however their tough talk and tough looks made them stand out and become multiple WWE Tag Team Champions.
kane
As already mentioned, Kane made several attempts under different personas to make it in WWE, but it wasn’t until the creation of The Undertakers’ brother Kane that Glen Jacobs became a star. Jacobs will be forever indebted to the people behind the creation of Kane.
the bogeyman
This gimmick has hundreds of people saying they hate it, but without it, Marty Wright would never have shown up and won on a card like Wrestlemania. He’s one of the worst wrestlers in recent memory, but he’s still an employee of the biggest wrestling company in the world. The Boogeyman gimmick probably won’t last long, but whatever the lifespan of it, Marty Wright’s wrestling career has been prolonged because of it.
Sting
Some would say that Steve Borden would have pulled it off with or without the creation of Sting and that may well be true, but the hack certainly accelerated his rise to the top.
