Movie review: Immortals

The movie ‘Immortals’ will hit the screens on November 11, 2011. Director Tarsem Singh (also director of The Fall and The Cell) will take us through a great story of revenge, betrayal and destiny. This gorgeous and stylish 3D movie showcases exciting action adventures. The main stars of ‘Immortals’ are Superman Henry Cavill, the beautiful Indian Freida Pinto, the beautiful Twilight star Kellan Lutz and Mickey Rourke. This cast will certainly make this movie a success.

Many centuries after the Gods’ victory over their battle against the Titans, another evil now threatens to scourge the land. Mad about the power he wields, King Hyperion (played by Mickey Rourke) has waged war against all mankind. Assembling an army of bloodthirsty, disfigured soldiers, he has searched all over Greece in search of the famous Arch of Epirus; this bow is known to be a weapon of incredible power forged by Ares in the heavens. It is only the person who has possession of this bow that can unleash the titans; The Titans have been captives buried within the walls of Mount Tartaros since the dawn of time and now they thirst for revenge. If the king seizes the bow, he will cause the destruction of mankind and totally destroy the gods. But as the ancient law commands, the gods must not get involved in the conflict between men. They have no power to stop Hyperion…so Theseus (played by Henry Cavill), a peasant, emerged as his only hope. He was very discreetly chosen by the god Zeus and hoped to save the lives of his people from King Hyperion and his mob. Gathering a group of companions from the outside, including the priestess and visionary Phaedra (played by Freida Pinto), as well as the cunning slave Stavros (played by Stephen Dorff), this hero will either successfully lead the rebellion or stand on the sidelines and he will watch his homeland being destroyed and his gods fade into legend.

Theseus meets the Sybelline Oracle, Phaedra, whose haunting visions of the young man’s future show him that he holds the key to stopping the devastation. With Phaedra’s help, he gathers a small group and accepts his fate in one last desperate fight for the future of humanity.

Looking at the trailer, I can tell you that the brutality exists, but it’s not hyper-masculine. Nobody will shout the name of their hometown and throw someone into a bottomless pit. Rather, you will notice the beautiful and eye-catching imagery that Singh has become popular for in his previous films The Fall and The Cell.

People really should accept the idea of handsome young gods as a fair shot. A famous conception of the Greek gods is that they are insignificant and vain, so it makes perfect sense that they look beautiful and young in Immortals. I find the consideration behind the decision of how to present the gods encouraging. I’m hoping that since there’s no doubt that Immortals is going to look splendid, there’s going to be some nice craziness.
