Badminton is a very popular racket sport that is played all over the world. To play, all you need is a set of badminton, which will include a pair of rackets, a net, and some shuttlecocks. (Shuttles are traditionally made from goose feathers glued to a small rounded cork. It is shaped like a funnel. When hit with a racket, it literally takes flight and floats in the air, moving in a straight line until gravity pulls it down. Note : Modern technology has given rise to the nylon steering wheel, which is normally used in recreation but has not been approved by the world governing body for official use).

Proper play will require you to play on a court with specific dimensions and a net. You can play singles or doubles. However, for fun and recreation, it can be played almost anywhere and even without a network. The objective of the game is to hit the shuttle over the net, within the limits of the court, from one side to the other. A point is gained or lost when the shuttle hits the ground (on and off the court) or when it is caught by the net or when the referee considers that a foul hit has been committed.

A set in badminton consists of 21 points and the first person (singles) or pair (doubles) to reach 21 points is the winner of the set. A typical badminton match would be based on the best of three (3) ‘sets’. The rules and regulations related to the game are governed by the Badminton World Federation (BWF).

For fun and recreation, all you need is a pair of rackets and some shuttlecocks. You define your own limits. It can be played on the beach, in the park or in any open space. Young children especially love to play, because they don’t even need to count the scores. Just grab a racket and hit the shuttlecock. The shuttlecock is designed so that it does not travel too fast in the air and is easily visible for any child or beginner to hit with a racket. It’s great fun for the whole family, from the grandkids to grandma and grandpa.

For professionals and serious players, however, it’s a totally different ball game. Flywheel speeds can reach hundreds of km/h. This is due to the physical preparation of the players and the technologically advanced equipment they use. It is a very challenging and lucrative sport. Serious players and professionals must undergo rigorous exercise routines to be competitive and their competitive life is usually 10 to 15 years.
