To protect Bella, Edward decides to end their relationship and Edward moves away from Forks. Bella leaves heartbroken and depressed.

In the months that follow, Bella tries to keep going by learning some activities like riding a motorcycle. She also seeks solace in her deepening friendship with Jacob Black. Later, Bella discovers that Jacob is a werewolf and he and his werewolf partner are protecting her from vampires Laurent and Victoria, the latter of whom is seeking revenge for her dead partner, James, who Cullens killed in the first series. .

Meanwhile, Bella tends to commit suicide because she believes that Edward will listen to her voice when she is in danger. Edward flees to Italy to provoke the Volturi, a vampire royalty that is capable of killing him. Alice and Bella race to Italy to save Edward, arriving just in time to stop him. When they return to Forks, Edward tells Bella that he has always loved her and that he only left Forks to protect her. She forgives him and the Cullens vote for Bella to become a vampire, much to Edward’s dismay. However, Edward gives Bella a choice: either let Carlisle change her after her graduation, or Edward will change her himself if she Bella agrees to marry him.
