Fun facts about alpacas

Many of the modern conveniences we have today are taken for granted. When these amenities were not available throughout history, alpaca fiber was the basis for the survival of many ancient civilizations.

• There are no naturally occurring oils, fats, or lanolin in alpaca fiber, so there is no need to worry that a garment made from alpaca fiber will have a foul odor that needs to be masked.
• Alpaca fiber is stronger than the most used merino wool; therefore, it is also more resistant to abrasion.
• Alpaca fiber is extremely durable. It can be mixed and dyed in any color without losing its natural shine.
• It is compatible with wool or yarn systems, so a garment does not necessarily have to be made entirely of alpaca fiber. In addition, since the fibers are so strong, they are resistant to water and can withstand solar radiation.
• Above all, alpaca fiber has a wonderfully silky sheen, which is very attractive to the eye, making it a staple in the garment industry.
• Alpacas are naturally clean when they live together. They even all use the same terrain as your common bathroom!
• Ancient Inca societies used the alpaca as their mode of survival. Everything they made, from clothes, roofs, bridges, was made of alpaca fiber. Even its coin shape was alpaca cloth!
• There are two main types of alpaca fiber; Huacaya alpaca fleece has a natural “curly” or “curly” in the fiber. This natural wave in the alpaca fiber creates a thread that retains its shape over time. Suri alpaca fleece is known for its natural shine and luster. Suri Alpaca fiber is what is commonly used in high-end woven products, as it shows the beautiful way its shine can interact with light.
