Dream Big – LDS Classic Movie

Dream Big was a film produced for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by the Brigham Young University Motion Picture Studio in the year 1987. This film begins with a team of minor league football players playing in a game of practice. The host of this movie is none other than the legendary quarterback Bart Starr. Bart Starr played for the Green Bay Packers and helped lead his team to win the first Super Bowl.

In this particular movie, Bart Starr presents the story of another legendary figure, Glenn Cunningham. The film then switches from the little league game to a flashback to the early part of the 20th century. It begins to tell the story of Glenn Cunningham, considered by many to be the greatest miler of all time.

The story tells how Glenn Cunningham grew up in humble circumstances and due to a very serious accident at the school where he studied, his legs were badly burned. The accident also cost his brother his life. Although he was injured, he was determined to walk again. Glenn and his parents massaged his legs to the best of his ability. When they got tired of massaging his legs, he himself worked and massaged his legs. Doctors at the time had told Glenn that he would never walk again, however, he soon began to walk, run and jump like any other child. His determination kept him going. He entered track at school.

The story then tells of his career as a miller. He won many indoor and outdoor races. Although this story took place a long time ago, the message remains the same that we should never give up our hopes and dreams.

The movie ends with Bart Starr bringing it back to modern times and explaining that those who succeed have drive and dream big. Although neither Glenn Cunningham nor Bart Starr are members of the LDS faith, members can celebrate with them the victories of those who have the drive and determination to be the best they can be at whatever they choose to do.

Glenn Cunningham is an inspiration to many, his favorite scripture says it all: “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength; they will lift up wings like eagles; they will run, and they will not grow weary; and walk, and not faint.” (Isaiah 40:31 KJV)
