The skin is the largest organ in the human body. Naturally fresh and healthy skin is protective of the body and a thing of beauty. Ayurveda texts recommend many herbs and natural remedies to protect our skin from acne, pimples, scars, marks, and wrinkles. These herbs and herbal remedies not only help in the conditions mentioned above but are also effective in other skin ailments like psoriasis, eczema etc.

Skin structure:

It is essential to know the structure of the skin before analyzing the causes that cause changes in the skin. The skin is made up of multiple layers of epithelial tissues. The microscopic section of the skin shows two well differentiated parts. The epidermis is the uppermost layer. The top layer of the epidermis contains dead cells that are gradually shed. These cells are gradually replaced by fresh new cells produced by the basal layer, which is the bottom layer of the epidermis.

The Dermis is located below the epidermis and consists of a network of collagen fibers that is responsible for the elastic properties of the skin. Sebaceous glands associated with hair follicles and sweat glands are all present in the dermis and derive their blood supply from the subcutaneous tissue present below the dermis. The sebaceous glands are activated during puberty and produce an oil-like substance called sebum.

According to ayurveda acharya Sushruta, the skin has seven layers. These layers when affected by unbalanced doshas (vital energy forces of the body) give rise to different skin diseases.

Herbs like tulsi, neem, saffron, turmeric, sandalwood, amla etc. They help keep the skin healthy and disease free. Here is the list of benefits that these herbs provide.
