The Law of Attraction Deception

For a while, I’ve wanted to “get this out of my system.” As such, this article may sound a bit like a “rant” and may get on some people’s nerves. On the one hand, my intention is not to cause any discontent; on the other hand, if it causes discontent, I’m grateful to have given you something deeper to consider.

Actually, for almost three years now, I was reminded from time to time of the seeming inconsistency of calling the Law of Attraction a “Law”. If it’s a law like gravity, why does it seem to work for some people and not others?

Some teachers have tried to reconcile this by saying that it has to do with what you believe, both consciously and unconsciously. They suggest that if you were to align both your conscious beliefs and your subconscious beliefs with what you want to attract, then you will attract it like magic.

Sounds good right?

My intention is not to criticize other approaches to the demonstration, but rather to question the inconsistencies. Why doesn’t the Law of Gravity require us to change our subconscious beliefs, but the Law of Attraction does?

Other “Spiritual Laws” do not even require subconscious belief changes to easily see the relationship of cause and effect: Law of Choices, Law of Action, Law of Balance, Law of Integrity, Law of Compassion… to name a few.

None of them require changing your subconscious beliefs to see results. They just require being aware that they exist and paying attention to how they manifest (interesting word, huh?) in your life when you take action in alignment with them. So why do we need to change our beliefs for the “Law of Attraction” to work?

Today I will try to answer that question. First of all, though, I want to say that I gladly use the term “Law of Attraction” because it’s an easy way to communicate a simple idea that’s gone mainstream, and that idea is this:

When we live in awareness, we can experience life the way we want to.

In other words, we can manifest what we want. However, the difference between my approach to the “Law of Attraction” and others is that I am not as concerned with manifesting “things”. I focus on manifesting experiences -and more specifically- inner experiences of our True Nature.

The teachers of the Popular Law of Attraction say that in order to attract the things you want, whether it be a car, a house, a relationship, more money, etc., you must first raise your vibration to be in alignment with that. Most conscious teachers go so far as to say that you should use affirmations to reprogram your subconscious to ensure that your conscious desires do not conflict with your subconscious desires. Even the most conscientious teachers will suggest that you not focus on the things you “want” and instead focus on how those things would make you feel.

For example, if you want the car, what do you really want from the car? Is it the adrenaline rush? Is it the feeling of success, or is it feeling abundant? What are the feelings inherent in a meaningful relationship you want? Connection, intimacy, fun, commitment, joy?

In other words, they say that in order to get what you want, you must first feel like you already have it. Some people say that you really have to believe you “deserve” it and “believe it will happen” even when the odds seem slim.

I don’t know about you, but I prefer the Law of Gravity. Drop something. See him fall. Yes, the law works! Why can’t the “Law of Attraction” be that simple?

My experience is that it can be. In fact, it is… we just don’t recognize it as such. Too many teachers have focused on the “getting stuff” aspect of the rally—because that’s what sells products, books, and seminars—that they have overlooked what the rally really is.

Experiencing your True Nature.

Why point to “things” when we can point to ourselves?

My belief is that all of us only want to manifest one basic thing: to be completely and totally well with our lives. Most of us project into the world what we think we need to make that happen. We say, “If I had more money, a bigger house, a better relationship, then I could relax.” But what if we learned to be happy now without all those things? If that were true, then all the “things in the world” would become the icing on the metaphorical cake. Then it would not be a question of “changing our vibration to get what we want”, but of “becoming what we want because we have changed our vibration”.

The way to manifest the inner experiences we want is to realize that we already had them to begin with. Do we want joy, abundance, peace, happiness? We had those qualities of True Nature when we were babies, but at some point in our lives we lost touch with those experiences.

When it comes to manifestation, strength, courage, and willpower are the fundamental qualities we need to “manifest” things in our lives. Without force, we will not initiate action. Without courage, we will remain locked in fear. Without willpower, we won’t be able to stay true to our dreams… especially when life gets tough.

The proof is not rocket science. It’s also not as simple as “Conceive, Believe and Act”. Yet it’s that simple and at the same time it can feel like rocket science. All we have to do is discover the subconscious barriers each of us has to experiencing our True Nature, which is inherently abundant, regardless of whatever “things” you wish to attract into your life.

However, getting into our subconscious is surprisingly difficult. Many teachers will misdirect you by saying that “affirmations are enough.” For some of them, this is actually true… I have great appreciation for Marc Allen (best-selling author and founder of New World Library) because he has transformed his life using little more than affirmations and academic reading.

However, for most people, affirmations go a long way in transforming their lives. That’s because throughout our lives, our subconscious was inefficiently and ineffectively reprogrammed, often without our consent. It took us our entire lives to believe that we had limited potential…so once we realize our unlimited potential, it can seem like we have a long way to go towards transformation.

That is also part of where I feel the “cheating” is when it comes to the Law of Attraction. Too much emphasis is placed on affirming positivity and raising the vibration positively, and not enough energy is invested in truly transforming your subconscious. Some teachers would even have you believe that if you have negative thoughts or feelings, you are sabotaging your ability to manifest what you want.

And that’s where it turns upside down.

See, the only way to truly live in a high positive vibration is to transform your self-sabotaging negative unconscious beliefs and feelings. Nullifying them will only work for so long, until your subconscious brings them back and causes you to sabotage even your best efforts. Negative thoughts and feelings are much more effective indicators to manifest that “things are”. That’s because negativity tells you which aspects of your subconscious still need to be transformed, and then, with the right tools, you can permanently transform those negative subconscious beliefs into experiences of your abundant True Nature.

Now this is where it gets tricky…

Your subconscious, and more specifically the “inner critic” aspect of your subconscious, wants to keep you cozy and small. It doesn’t want you to experience abundance, and it doesn’t want you to manifest your dreams. For your Inner Critic, the manifestation is nonsense that will make you feel uncomfortable and expansive. Your Inner Critic will always have something discouraging to say about your ability to manifest until you transform the Inner Critic itself.

However, that is not an easy task because few bodies of work focus on this aspect of our subconscious. Byron Katie doesn’t really talk about the “Law of Attraction” but he does help people manifest the life they really want to live. She uses another word for “Law of Attraction” which is “The Work”.

That’s what it really is. The Law of Attraction is working on your subconscious, bringing it out into the open, so that you can experience both your subconscious and conscious in alignment with your True Nature. So yes, the teachers who say you need to align your subconscious and conscious are right.

Not only that, but I took you in a boomerang direction earlier when I said that the other spiritual laws do not require you to transform your subconscious. While they don’t ‘require’ you to transform your subconscious to see cause and effect results in your life, you do have to change your subconscious if you want those results to stick permanently.

For example, if you lack the ability to act (according to the “Law of Action”), it’s not because your conscious mind has led you astray… it’s because your Inner Critic has subconsciously led you to believe that you feel more comfortable not taking measures. And even if you’re the best action taker in the world, if your Inner Critic quietly sabotages your willpower, you’ll rarely finish what you started.

The beauty of spiritual laws is that as long as you take actions in alignment with the law, you will see the expected results. If you act in accordance with the Law of Action, you will see results in your life. Over time, your subconscious is naturally transformed by the constant habit of taking action, and in this way you are using the “input equals output” formula to transform your life and your subconscious.

However, that is a long and slow road that requires a lot of faith and trial and error. You also have a caveat: if you’re not taking action in ways that also amplify your other True Nature qualities, even your best efforts (such as taking action) will be sabotaged by your unwillingness to “stand your ground.” “In other words, just focusing on the affirmations and taking action is actually the slowest path to transforming your life.

That is why, in my experience, the fastest way to manifest is to focus on discovering and developing very specific qualities of my True Nature. Qualities such as strength, courage and willpower allow me to move forward in life. I can then focus on qualities like abundance, joy, and gratitude to permanently “raise my vibration” and manifest the inner experiences that truly satisfy me. That’s the cake I really want and then all the extra stuff is just “frosting”.

Don’t get me wrong… I am definitely the icing on the cake (especially the chocolate cake!), and just like you I would love to experience more financial abundance and even more fulfilling relationships. The difference is that I don’t confuse the icing on the cake. What I want is to fully experience my True Nature, and then I can bring that with me no matter what I do in life. Things come and go, but my True Nature is here to stay.

Which brings me back to square one…what is the real “Law of Attraction” hoax?

It is the suggestion that any of us wants to manifest something other than our True Nature.
