Life in prison with Lauryn Hill

On July 8, 2013, my existence, as I have known it for the past 5 years in prison, instantly changed. I was so drained, physically, emotionally, and spiritually that I had no idea how oppressed my spirit self really was. In the midst of my own internal chaos, a beautiful chocolate face with a warm smile and a glowing spirit brought my dry bones back to life. She has caused a worldwide wind of knowledge, faith and courage in my broken spirit. It was a tremendous boost, at a time and place where I least expected it. Through his purity and openness, he has encouraged me to be myself, without cuts, despite the barriers that separate me from the free world.

At first glance, I admired Lauryn’s courage, which I quickly discovered was contagious. Lauryn reminds me of Angela Davis or Assatta Shakur for their knowledge and strength. As a soldier trained for war, he jumped right into the prison routine and hasn’t missed a beat. Surprisingly, she didn’t shed a tear or complain. Instead, she opened her spirit for God to use her. Almost immediately, he reached out to listen and comfort the many wounded souls in Danbury Federal Prison Camp. I am one of them.

I had the pleasure of spending many hours talking to Lauryn about life and her experiences. In such a short time I learned a lot! I had no idea how smart he really is. I only saw her as a singer, but the truth is that she has vast knowledge on so many different levels that it is almost scary. It was shocking to see that we share many things in common, including difficulties. In just a few days, she became the sister she had from the same father, but a different mother than the one she had never known. After 5 years of what seemed like endless pain and disappointment, through Lauryn’s company I experienced intense joy, which is a rare experience in prison.

Some may have mistaken her for a madwoman, but the truth is that she is POWERFUL! He possesses a set of spiritual abilities that few have, which is why his conversations are life changing. It is definitely a living inspiration. Like many women in prison, she is a survivor! People may view his imprisonment as his death, but it is his resurrection. Lauryn doesn’t just “talk for the sake of talking.” She “walk, walk!” Don’t sleep on it! She knows her mission and assignment from God, and she’s on to it! In a few days the presence of his mother has changed our tired environment and has given hope to many women. To us, she is a modern day Harriet Tubman. In my heart, I know that she came to set us captives free!
