When you work as a securities attorney, you will have to be responsible for three different areas, including:

• Acting as a resource

• Stay informed about legal rulings and new laws on securities.

• Equity securities: they are shares of a corporation.

• Loans of debt securities, also called bonds, that are granted to a country or company

• Derivative securities: are based on the value of underlying bonds, assets or stocks.

When you work as an attorney, your main focus is working for corporate clients. Generally, all large companies that trade in their stocks will have a securities attorney working for them or as a down payment. Some will work for government agencies in binding or enforcement.

To become a securities attorney, you will need a bachelor’s degree, complete law school, and pass the bar exam. It is recommended that when you obtain your bachelor’s degree it is in finance, accounting or business. Being a securities attorney is a field that is very complex, so it is necessary to have a good understanding of financial practices or business accounting to have a successful career.

Securities laws are very complex, and generally these attorneys are detail-oriented. Due to the complexity of the issues, working in litigation or enforcement is very challenging positions. Working as a securities attorney requires that you stay up-to-date on all developments and changes in securities law.

Another important role that such a lawyer plays is interacting with his clients, so it is important that they have good interpersonal and communication skills. They will participate in providing guidance on company policy, conflict resolution, litigation management, and company protection during audits they may have. It is critical that you have effective conflict resolution skills.

In many companies, a securities attorney will play an important role as an expert resource. Senior executives will often need legal opinions from their securities attorney before making a decision regarding company procedures or the implementation of a new policy.
