Tulum is simply the jewel of the Riviera Maya corridor. It is a paradise for divers. Underground rivers join from all over the Yucatan Peninsula and Mexico’s Riviera Maya. Tulum is divided into three main areas: the city of Tulum, the Hotel Zone of Tulum and the magical archaeological site of Tulum. The Town is settled on the edges of Highway 307, where commercial and social activities take place. It is located 130 km / 80 miles from Cancun.

The magic of Tulum begins in its splendid archaeological sites. It is the most popular of the Mayan sites in Mexico, and for several good reasons. Tulum is surrounded by three walls and with the ocean forming the fourth boundary, the city was designed to be defensive. Tulum is one of the most visited Mayan ruins, and it is also the only major Mayan ruin to be found along the Caribbean coast of Mexico in the “Riviera Maya”. Tulum is undoubtedly the most exquisite ancient site in the Mayan world and considered one of the most beautiful Mayan archaeological sites. Tulum is by no means the largest, but its location serves as a striking backdrop to its history.

Tulum is more than a sunny escape – it has sprawling Mayan ruins, freshwater springs for swimming, and impressive ecotourism. It is the combination of a beach coast, an archaeological zone and a town. Tulum offers its visitors an excellent place of physical and spiritual relaxation, the possibility of practicing meditation, yoga or taking a traditional Mayan Temazcal steam bath, or enjoying a delightful massage on the beach.

The hotel zone of Tulum was built with a natural and simple architecture, to integrate virtually with the natural environment. It leans towards the beach cabana style, offering everything from simple lodging options to newer and more expensive chic-style palapas. The hotel zone is one mile east of the beach, as are the famous Mayan ruins of Tulum. Hotels a few steps from the beach that are for the most part small, low rise and quite simple. The hotel zone of Tulum has few hotels and cabins in this 9km extension, coming from the town and turning left you have 3 km and turning right the other 6 km.

Tulum is also surrounded by lush jungle filled with crystalline freshwater pools called cenotes that offer a refreshing repeat of the tropical environment. Tulum can be crowded and hot, so it’s best to visit in the morning before the cruise ship and bus groups arrive around 10:00. Tulum is also famous for its cenotes; Pools of crystalline fresh water typical of Mother Nature that are immersed in Mayan history and ritual. Their hotels in Tulum have very different styles, prices and amenities. Tulum is truly the destination for lovers of ecotourism, nature, tranquility, sun and history.
