Bear Grylls Knife – A Cut Above The Competition

admin 0

Bear Grylls Ultimate Pro is the latest version of the Bear Grylls Gerber knife collection. The knife is a complete redesign of the original. They basically went back to the drawing boards to make a really pretty knife. Even though the original Bear Grylls knife is the best-selling knife in the world, it had its fair share of critics who struck the blade for its sub-par steel, the serrations on the blade, and that it was not a true blade. full tang. Gerber and Bear took that criticism as fuel for the fire. The new Bear Grylls Ultimate Pro has incredible steel, using 9cr19Mov, which is a Chinese version of 440C. This steel is strong, non-corrosive, and will polish and retain a sharp edge. Very high quality. The next item they tackled was the tang. The PRO has a fully exposed shank down to the pummel and has slab handles. The knife blade actually reminds me of the SOG Seal Team Elite. Lastly, the improvement in the lanyard whistle as it made it more loaded and easier to use.

This version of the Bear Grylls Gerber knife is full tang and has slab handles so you can see the tang until you hit the knife. This was a major point of criticism about the original Bear Grylls knife. Another positive aspect is that they produced this knife with a fine edge. There are no stretch marks on this bad boy as the original was heavily criticized for that. The blade is reminiscent of the Sog Seal Team Elite rule with one finger at the base of the blade. The blade steel has been upgraded to 9cr19mov, which Gerber calls premium steel. I have done a lot of research and I think this is a Chinese steel equivalent to 440C stainless steel, which is a high quality stainless steel. The lanyard whistle has also been upgraded to a stronger and easier to use whistle.

Gerber Bear Grylls Knife – The PRO Sheath

The Ultimate Pro Survival Knife Case has also been updated. Not only does it look and feel a lot different, it’s more compact and has a few key changes that make it easier to use, and just a tighter design. The case looks a lot more slippery this time, but time will tell if it’s actually quality materials and if it will hold up.

Big improvements to the sheath are an upward facing refractory steel instead of the traditional "upside down" fiery steel that was prone to falling off and being consumed by the forest floor. The fired steel appears to be the same as the original, however it is now facing upward on the chainstay, which is a definite upgrade. The other big improvement is the sharpener. Instead of having to remove the cover "Besides" to get to the sharpener, it is now built into the blade sheath. Now it’s a removable carbide sharpener vs. the predecessor with its diamond stone sharpener. Another feature that has been revamped is the Survival Guide Priorities placement. Now it makes its home within the area where you put the holster on your belt.

All in all, the big improvements are the full tang, better blade steel, and the fine edge. This appears to be a more serious utility knife than its predecessor, but time will tell. It’s hard to imagine that the new Bear Grylls Gerber knife could possibly sell better than the old one, but, again, time will tell.
