American Staffordshire Terrier: Facts You Should Know Before Adopting American Staffordshire Terrier

The American Staffordshire Terrier is a medium-sized, short-haired breed whose ancestors originated in England. Its size gives the impression of great strength, with a muscular and plump appearance. The average weight for this breed is 57 to 67 pounds, with a height of 17 to 19 inches.

Coat

Its coat is short, dense, shiny, close to the skin and rigid to the touch. Their fur is the same length all over the body. Black, white, red, fawn, or blue with white or a shade of brindle coats are all acceptable.

Activity

Without daily exercise, the American Staffordshire Terrier will become restless and difficult to handle. They require long walks, jogs, or daily runs. Dogs should be behind or to the side of the person holding the leash, as instinct tells them that the leader shows the way and that the leader has to be human.

Temperament

Known for their good temperament, these dogs make a reliable companion. This breed is excellent with young children, although supervision is still needed as it is a very strong dog.

They are a loyal, intelligent, devoted and tough breed. Although they make a great household pet when properly socialized, they often don’t get along well with other pets.

General description

Most of the time, it is believed that the Staffordshire and the American Pit Bull Terrier are of the same breed, with the American Staffordshire Terrier being recognized with the show breed, while the one considered as the fighting dog is the American Pit Bull Terrier . These two breeds are considered as different breeds by various registries, although some consider them the same and are bred to have the same build and qualities.

Careful

Grooming is easy for the American Staffordshire Terrier. Regular brushing with a stiff bristle brush and bathing or dry shampooing as needed is required. Rubbing with a piece of towel or chamois will make your coats shine. They are susceptible to hives caused by insect bites or stress and hip dysplasia.

Training

This breed is generally tenacious, friendly, courageous, determined, and extremely attentive. They are naturally intelligent, confident, and fearless and have been known to be great with children if raised properly. Like Terriers, they tend to regard smaller animals as prey. They are known to be hostile towards other dogs of the same sex.

These dogs are very energetic and lively, so they can be difficult to train. Intelligent but stubborn and willful, this type of breed needs firm and consistent training from a dominant trainer to avoid authority issues that may arise. Obedience classes are recommended as early as possible for this breed.

Character

American Staffordshire Terriers have long maintained an intimidating reputation as they are primarily used for the “sport” of dog fighting. Contrary to that, this breed is very gentle, devoted and loving. These dogs make an excellent companion dog for an experienced and dominant owner, and they make wonderful watchdogs, naturally protecting their family, home, and territory.
